If it was possible, would you like to be Chinese?
I am an 18-year-old Chinese girl. I was born in Jiangsu Province and now, I live in Shanghai, one of the biggest cities in China.
If I could choose, I wouldn’t be a Chinese girl.
In China, girls can’t get what they deserve. We are discriminated
/dɪˈskrɪmɪneɪtɪd/in employment cause most people believe that boys are better than girls. I know it’s a global phenomenon, but in China, it’s more serious. We need to give birth to babies, it will take us a long time to recover. But some companies are discomfort about it. So, you can see many Chinese women go back to work even they haven’t recovered.China’s GDP is very high, however, the average is very low, leading to the lack of higher education. In China, we must work very hard to get in a good university. If we failed in the college entrance examination, we will never be able to change our life. So we are always under high pressure. Since I entered high school, I never went to bed before 11 p.m. When I was in the 12nd grade, I always stay up until midnight, and get up at six the next day.
Even if you are admitted into a top university, you can’t make sure you’ll graduate smoothly. Not because the policy is tight, but because the system is not reasonable. Your professor can decide a lot. For example, a few days ago, a boy named Tao committed suicide because his professor controlled him mentally, but the university didn’t, and perhaps wouldn’t, do anything. Even you graduated, and get a good job, you can hardly purchase a house in first-class cities like Shanghai and Beijing. You need at least 5 million RMB , maybe around a million dollars to buy a small, old house away from CBD. Meanwhile, the average rent is going higher gradually, and maybe your salary could hardly cover the rent.
And do you know why Chinese users in Quora is so few? Cause there is a wall between China and the outside world. We can’t know what is going on outside directly. What is going on in America? What is going on in the UK? What the hell is gong on? We dont’t know. I did something to cross the wall, but many other users, they can’t. Before I went to college, I knew nothing about quora, instagram, youtube and many other foregin websites. Fortunately, we can login in github freely.
I believe China can be better, and China must be better.
And I’m deeply aware that China is doing much better than other developing countries, but this can’t be the excuse for us to stop progressing. Being better than others cannot be our final goal. We should word hard together for our ideal.
We still have a long way to go.
When I say I’d rather not be a Chinese girl, I mean China still has a long way to go before we make our great ideal come true instead of thinking life in USA or other countries could be better. Some of the problems I pointed out above was a global phenomenon, even the USA is no exception.
Even though being a Chinese girl must face a lot of challenges, here I am and I couldn’t choose. I love my motherland heart and soul, and I will work hard to devote myself to helping make the world a better place.
Finally, I just login in Quora yesterday, and even though I always get high marks in English, I can’t express my opinion clearly. I would be grateful if you point out my grammar mistakes and help me make some modifications.
